ABSTRACT
Green crafts with unique style and sense have become in the limelight as people afford the time and get away from popularity and uniformity in cultural taste. This study takes a material approach to the green crafts assuming that competitiveness in today's craft industry based on eco-friendly culture is dependent on selected materials. The study focuses on domestic small woods as materials of tea utensils and furniture, which have been thrown away due to the failure to carry economic value. Even though the wood with heat treatment has been used as construction and interior materials, but little is employed in crafts.
With the increasing importance of green culture, the number of tea people has increased, and more people get interested in tea utensils and furniture. However, there are fewer specialists in the industry of wood tea utensils, and over 90% of the materials are imported woods. Accompanying problems are increase in the raw material cost, overheated competition among domestic craftspeople operating small shops due to domestic overproduction at lower prices using semimanufactured goods from China and Southeast Asia, and especially the failure to reflect Korean traditional culture in design. Given this, this study attempts to develop basic tea utensils and furniture, applying color on domestic heat treatment small woods and combining traditional techniques and modern designs. Furthermore, the study investigates the possibility that this heat treatment wood may be substituted for highly priced dark timbers such as ebony and rosewood.
In the present study, I review artworks using dark natural timbers and point out through classification of dark natural timbers in colors that heat treatment wood can replace dark natural timbers. I also see if there are any possible problems with laminated boards made of torrefied and naturally dried woods. The laminated boards did not create deformation in different temperatures and humidities. The experiment indicates that torrefied small woods are useful as a craft material. The development of crafts employing torrefied small woods is necessitated in the time when research on heat treatment wood is active in the country.
The tea utensils and furniture developed in my study show that torrefied small woods can be alternative to dark timbers. Application of torrefied small woods may revitalize the sluggish distribution of domestic woods. Furthermore, the employment of heat treatment wood in the field of wood crafts will generate the value of small woods as materials.
